Thursday, California’s “right-to-die law” will go into effect and some are already lining up to profit from it.

Once the law goes into effect, terminally ill patients—who meet specific criteria, proponents say—will be able to ask their doctors for a prescription for life-ending medication. But when physicians who still hold to their Hippocratic Oath—or who has faith-based concerns—Dr. Lonny Shavelson has a clinic ready to step in.

According to local media reports, the Berkeley doctor already has “several appointments” lined up to “evaluate” the patients’ situations.

“This needs to be well thought out, carefully planned,” he told a local TV station during a recent interview. “It’s not something you call on Tuesday and say, ‘Doctor, I’m suffering,’ and on Wednesday we give you a prescription.”

“End-of-life care” has become the latest battleground in the pro-life battle for many Christians. California adopted its law when a woman went to Oregon in order to end her own life, but now many other states are debating similar legislation.

The Pro-Life Healthcare Alliance is a nondenominational, faith-based program of Human Life Alliance that provides reliable pro-life information about medical decision making and the challenges facing pro-life healthcare providers and patients. According to its website, it shares faith-inspired principles that guide the care, support and protection of the life and dignity of all human beings:

We are in the process of establishing a support network of health care providers and organizations who subscribe to the pro-life healthcare philosophy. We seek to work together to pool our resources and courageously oppose imposed death, help vulnerable patients and their families, and renew reverence for life within healthcare and society.
