Why You Should See This Christian Comedy This Valentine’s Day

A new Christian film is coming out this Valentine’s Day, and I think everyone should go see it. The indie romantic comedy, called First Lady: A Modern Fairytale, follows a woman who is not married to the president as she runs for first lady.

The main character, Kate Morales (played by Nancy Stafford from Matlock), loses her husband while he was acting as president. She then agrees to help the vice president, Taylor Brooks (Benjamin Dane), in his bid for presidency. What happens next is sure to evoke laughter as opposing parties butt heads and encounter old flames. (Watch the trailer here.)

“I wanted to create a film that would offer tender moments and humor for the entire family but with a political setting,” says the movie’s writer, producer and director, Nina May. “We see two people who reunite later in life and discover it’s not too late for their ‘happily ever after,’ but we also experience a light-hearted comedy about the White House and palace intrigue.”

I recently had the honor of speaking with May. I’ve known her and her husband for about 30 years, and in that time, she has accomplished so much. So why did she create this Christian romantic comedy? She says it comes from her passion for both romantic comedies and politics.

“I had a radio show and TV show [a few years ago], and someone asked me a very unique question: ‘Would you ever consider running for president?’ And without missing a beat, I said, ‘No, but I’d love to run for first lady,'” May says. “I thought, That would be an interesting movie to do. So I toyed with it and … as I’m writing it, I’m thinking, Oh, I know the perfect first lady for this would be Nancy Stafford, who’s a very dear friend. So after I wrote it, I sent it to her and she loved it. And the rest is history.”

It’s not very often that you see a faith-based rom-com like May’s. That’s why I encourage you to go out to the theaters this Friday and watch it for Valentine’s Day. Every ticket people buy for this film is a vote in favor of clean, family-friendly movies.

May tells me that the official NPA rating for First Lady is PG, and it’s guaranteed to be in the theaters for at least a week. The goal is that the tickets sell so well that the movie stays in theaters for a long time so that everyone has a chance to see it.

It’s interesting to see how God prepared May for this film with her experience in TV filming, writing, documentaries and more. I look forward to seeing Him raise up more Christians in the film industry who can revolutionize our culture with their values-driven productions.
