A DeKalb County police deputy on Wednesday afternoon shot a man accused of murdering his girlfriend’s child in the parking lot of Bishop Eddie Long’s New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, Ga.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office deputies were pursuing Nicholas Clarence Wade on a murder warrant, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Lt. Kyle Jones as saying. He told the paper, “They were able to track the subject to this church.”

The 27-year-old Wade reportedly told the child’s mother, Jillian Belk, he called 911 because the boy was having difficulty breathing. The toddler was in cardiac arrest when paramedics arrived, according to the police report. Police said the child had a cracked liver and fractured skull.

“On Wednesday, Wade, who was armed with a sawed-off shotgun, pointed the gun at himself then at the deputy, prompting another deputy to shoot him, DeKalb County Sheriff Thomas Brown said,” the paper reported. “The deputies were not injured.”

Police shot Wade three times, and he is now hospitalized in stable condition.
