Sixty years ago this August, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Six decades later, it is still touching the hearts of millions who listen to its godly message.

On the day of what would have been his 94th birthday (Jan. 15), MLK’s niece, Dr. Alveda King, says her uncle’s dream still inspires her today to carry on his legacy the kingdom principles for which his ministry was based.

“I was brought up to understand that in every generation, truth has to be taught,” Alveda King told Charisma News’ John Matarazzo in this exclusive interview. “The Bible says, write these precepts on your heart and teach them to your children’s children.

“In every generation, truth must be taught—faith, hope and love, peace and non-violence. The loving community has to be taught in every generation. When we don’t teach it in every generation, the younger ones will forget it and we will see things shift away from God’s grace and truth.”

Monday, Jan. 16, is the day America officially celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day. It is designated as a federal holiday and celebrated each year on the third Monday of January.

Alveda King says she made it a point during the recent holidays to make sure her children and her grandchildren continued to hear the message of Jesus’ love that her uncle so eloquently spoke of.

2023CMPrintcover“I was brought up to live out the principles that you hear in my life,” she says. “I’m 72 years old, and during the Christmas holiday, I spent a lot of time with my children and grandchildren talking about God, talking about Jesus, talking about living Godly lives without fear and being repentant and forgiving and loving.

“So, the dream of Martin Luther King Jr. is alive, and it is alive in our hearts in every generation. The dream that Martin Luther King Jr. used to inspire nations and generations was inspired by God. God is eternal and God is forever. So, the dream still lives on today.”
