Masters Champion and Caddie: A Duo Made in Heaven

When Scottie Scheffler needed a caddie for the Professional Golfers’ Association Tour, he knew he wanted to work with someone who was a dedicated Christian.

When Ted Scott and Bubba Watson, who had worked with each other for 15 years on the PGA Tour, broke up at the end of the 2021 season, Scheffler knew he had his man. And it was Scott who has proven to be a big part of Scheffler’s success, including his three-shot victory Sunday in The Masters.

Scott and Scheffler had hooked up for a regular Bible study months before Scheffler convinced Scott to give up plans for retirement and join him on the tour.

“He keeps things loose,” Scheffler said of Scott, who helped Watson win two Masters titles, in 2012 and 2014. “We have a lot of fun together. I respect him a lot as a person, and I respect his work ethic as a caddie. And so, for me, it’s been a pretty easy relationship so far just because I respect him so much.”

Scott explained on the Sports Spectrum Podcast that having God in his life has made the pressures of life on the PGA Tour, which can be exhilarating and rigorous at times, he says, a lot less stressful.

“People a lot of times think, well, if you become a Christian, God’s just gonna make everything easy for you, and that’s not the case,” Scott says. “But having the God of the universe, the Creator, on your side just makes things a lot easier to deal with. And the principles of the Bible are something that, when you use them, you can see it manifest in your life.”

Scheffler agrees.

“I’m a Christian guy, so that’s important to me,” he said in a 2019 interview with PGATour.com. “But even if you’re not a Christian, life is important to spend with people you enjoy. If you don’t have close, quality friends, I don’t think whatever you’re doing is important. So that would be my most important advice to someone. Find something you enjoy doing, and enjoy doing it with other people.”

With Good Friday approaching in a few days, Scott says believers should really dig deep into the significance of this holiest of days.

“If you haven’t already, I encourage you to look into the meaning behind Good Friday,” Scott said on Instagram. “The significance of today changed my life indefinitely! #GoodFriday ‘For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him’.” {eoa}
