Choosing Life: True Stories of Abortion and God’s Healing Grace

As a mom of three, Ruth Coghill faced an unexpected pregnancy in her 40s.

Offered an abortion by her doctor, she chose life. She later compiled a collection of the astounding stories of women—and men—impacted by abortion, Unborn and Untold: True Stories of Abortion and God’s Healing Grace. Ruth shares several compelling narratives from the book and God’s power to heal, redeem and restore. She is also the author of the WOW Bible Study series, four lessons for the time-constrained woman.

The founder of Words to Inspire: Lifelong Empowerment from God’s Word, she and her husband, Bob, have four adult children and 13 grandchildren. They love in the Kawarthas in Ontario, Canada. Connect with Ruth at wordstoinspire.ca.

This was Angela’s most riveting moment with Ruth on a recent episode of the Make Life Matter podcast on the Charisma Podcast Network:

“The doctor, counselor, let my husband and [me] know that it was now our choice whether we wanted to abort our baby. When I went home, I couldn’t get that out of my mind. It was just not in my frame of reference. We had three beautiful children, and I had never been asked that. Was it just because of my age? What was this all about?

“So, I really started thinking about it. Then I began to wonder; What would I have done if Bob hadn’t been with me? What if I hadn’t had somebody who loved me who was going to help me raise this child? All of these questions started coming to my mind. But I let it go, and our beautiful boy was born.

“Well, January 8, 2019, this son, Alexander James, and his wife, delivered their first baby boy. I stood there, 30 years later, and I looked at our son holding his little boy, and it was if God spoke volumes: ‘This is your blessing for choosing life.’

“I came home from that hospital and I knew that I had to tell my story. Over the years, I had women from my church, and others, come to me and ask, “Would you tell my story? I can’t tell it. I’ve had an abortion, and I can’t even talk about it.”

I had this burning passion and asked the Lord how to do a collection of stories of people whose lives have been impacted by abortion. The narrative of abortion in this country is astounding. My prayer was, ‘Is there anything I can do to change the narrative?’ God said, “Watch Me.”
