These Kingdom Warriors Are Meeting the Practical, Spiritual Needs of the Most Vulnerable

Brown limbs flailed as trembling hands worked to hold them steady. Dehydration caused the tiniest of veins to shrink, making it nearly impossible to thread a vital needle. Alix, the young American nurse dedicated to nurturing and caring for the orphaned babies of Gertrude’s Orphanage in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, wiped sweat from her brow and tried yet again to save Christine’s life.

Christine, along with four other children at the orphanage, suffered a critical case of cholera: a purely preventable disease caused by a lack of clean water. Alix worked tirelessly to nurse the little ones back to health, spurred on by the death of another child earlier in the week.

This story is just one of many around the globe. More than 844 million people live without access to safe water.

As the world celebrates World Water Day by encouraging initiatives to preserve water and remember conservation efforts, Christian organizations like Samaritan’s Purse, Charity: Water and Lifewater work toward their goal of seeing every individual have access to clean, safe and pure water.

These organizations and countless like them are equipping communities in third-world countries like Haiti with the resources to have sustainable clean water, education on basic hygiene practices and long term solutions to a global crisis.

The efforts don’t stop there. Ensuring the physical safety and well-being of their recipients is the primary goal. But these kingdom workers are also ensuring every life they touch has the opportunity to learn about the well of living water that will never run dry: salvation through Jesus Christ.

The act of meeting practical needs is the bridge to sharing the hope of the gospel with those who desperately need it.
