A controversial campaign calling for pro-LGBT education throughout Scottish schools has received official backing at Holyrood.

The Scottish government has pledged to support the Time for Inclusive Education (TIE) campaign, which advocates compulsory teaching on sexuality, transsexualism and gender identity, as well as pro-LGBT sexual health education.

A working group will be established to discuss the aims of the campaign and hear recommendations from Stonewall Scotland, LGBT Youth Scotland and TIE.

Commitment

The Scottish Government's Minister for Further Education, Higher Education and Science, Shirley-Anne Somerville, offered 'whole-hearted' government support for TIE's aims during a debate at Holyrood yesterday.

She said, "We recognize that we can and must do more, which is why we have given a commitment to work with the TIE campaign.

"That is why this government announced just an hour ago the creation of a new LGBTI-inclusive education working group to help bring key educators together with TIE".

Sixty-eight MSPs have signed a pledge supporting TIE. This means that any legislation put forward is likely to be passed.

Trojan Horse

If the aims of the TIE campaign were to be adopted in Scottish schools, children would receive compulsory teaching on a number of LGBT issues and topics including:

  • Homophobia, biphobia and transphobia,
  • Same-sex relationships,
  • The Equal Rights Movement, Stonewall and the Gay Liberation Movement,
  • Sexualities and sexual orientation
  • Transsexualism and gender identity
  • And pro-LGBT sexual health education.

Rev. David Robertson, founder of the Solas Center for Public Christianity, has described the TIE campaign as a "Trojan horse to impose an ideological perspective on all pupils".

He believes the campaign is an attempt to "indoctrinate school pupils with one particular perspective on moral and sexual ethics, and one which is contrary to mainstream Christianity."
