Hami* didn’t know what to do. He had no direction in his life, didn’t manage to get a permanent job and his mother couldn’t provide for him anymore either. When one day he heard about the Operation Mobilization tailoring training program, things started to change.
Hami grew up in a village in the north of Bangladesh. His father was a shopkeeper. Although they weren’t rich, they were a happy family. However, when Hami was only 5 months old, trouble struck: Hami’s father was diagnosed with a stomach ulcer.
The family took out loans to be able to get Hami’s father the medical treatment he needed. But during an operation to remove the ulcer, he died, leaving Hami’s mother in debt with no means to earn a living.
After searching for a long time, she finally found a job cooking and cleaning in a hostel for college students. It was hard work and the pay was low, but it was enough to keep Hami in school and put food on the table. But before he was able to finish secondary school, another financial crisis hit the family. Hami had to leave school.
Desperately looking for direction in his life, Hami one day found out about the tailoring training program that OM offers. He was very excited to join it. It was his dream that one day he would be able to set up his own tailoring shop in the village. Unfortunately, due to various circumstances, Hami dropped out of the course.
However, the instructor decided he would not give up on Hami and began to visit him regularly. Over time, Hami started to respect his instructor. He enjoyed discussing religious subjects with him. It was not long before Hami knew that the only way to gain peace with God was through faith. After many months, he started to follow the One who said: “I am the way, the truth and the life.”
He got married, but still didn’t have a regular source of income. Ultimately, Hami rejoined the OM tailoring program, but now together with his spouse in a special training for husbands and wives. Together they learned how to measure, cut and sew material and become qualified tailors. They also studied God’s Word together. After a little while, Hami’s wife, and also his mother, became believers as well.
After finishing the training, Hami got a sewing machine. He and his wife use this machine in the small business set up in their home. “This training and the business have transformed the whole family,” said Hami. They have brought dignity and a standing in society that his family never had before. Hami is using all of this to the glory of God.
