On June 12, the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference (NHCLC) will hold a special town hall meeting and prayer rally on the topic of immigration reform in Washington, D.C.

“We stand on the edge of the Jordan called immigration reform,” reads a flier for the event, organized by NHCLC chapter director Tony Suarez. “On the other side lies the promised land of integration, secured borders and healthy communities. What will it take for us as a nation to get there? Two words: prophetic courage.

“We have 11 million hard-working, family-loving, God-fearing individuals, who contribute daily to the spiritual and economic well-being of our nation, waiting to step in. This is not the time for political showmanship. The National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference calls on Congress not to sacrifice 11 million people on the altar of political expediency by marrying the issue of same-sex marriage with immigration reform.

“Let us not be distracted. Let us be deliberate in the final crossing. It's time to pray. Join us as we advance not the agenda of the donkey or the elephant, but only the agenda of the Lamb,” the flier concludes.

This event is free. The town hall meeting will begin at 8 a.m. at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill, followed by a prayer rally at the Capitol from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

“Our focus is to pray that comprehensive immigration reform be passed this year,” Suarez explains. “We are also interceding for the spiritual health of our nation. There are those that want to include the debate on same-sex marriage in the proposed legislation for comprehensive immigration reform. As Christians we cannot sit idly by and allow this to happen. We are first and foremost followers of Christ. The agenda of the Lamb is our first priority.”
