US Supreme Court Outlaws Partial-Birth Abortion

The Supreme Court upheld in April a federal ban on partial-birth abortion, the highly controversial late-term abortion procedure that involves partially removing the fetus and crushing its skull.

The court’s majority opinion stated: “The law need not give abortion doctors unfettered choice in the course of their medical practice,” The Associated Press reported.

The 5-4 ruling by America’s more conservative bench preserved the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act that Congress passed and President Bush signed into law in 2003.

“This is the first legal crack in the crumbling Roe v. Wade foundation,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. “If partial birth abortions are unconstitutional, then all abortion should be as well,” he added, describing “suction abortions” as even “more gruesome” than partial-birth abortion.
