Report: New Criminal Investigation to Be Launched Soon

Attorney General Jeff Sessions

You might be surprised to know the Department of Justice hasn’t yet investigated a single leak of sensitive and classified information—in violation of federal law—from Obama administration holdovers on the White House staff to the liberal mainstream media.

It seems that’s about to change, according to a new report Wednesday morning by The Washington Post. It’s reporting “officials said Sessions is due to announce in coming days a number of criminal leak investigations based on news accounts of sensitive intelligence information.” Ironically, the source of The Washington Post’s report is an anonymous leak from within the Trump administration.

“Leaking” has been a mainstay of Washington, D.C., politics and news coverage of the government. But, passing classified information, regardless of the reason, is a criminal act under federal law. Some of the leaks Sessions is said to be investigating include details of counterterrorism efforts that have created diplomatic problems for the U.S.

President Donald Trump has been pressing for this kind of announcement for several weeks.

“I want the attorney general to be much tougher on the leaks from intelligence agencies, which are leaking like rarely have they ever leaked before at a very important level,” he said during his Rose Garden press conference Tuesday afternoon.

Sessions, one of the president’s earliest supporters during the 2016 presidential campaign, has taken a lot of heat from his boss in recent weeks, primarily because of his decision to recuse himself from the runaway investigation of the “Russia Narrative.” He has reportedly told the White House he has no intention of resigning, but this news report suggests the president’s message is getting through. {eoa}
