Republican Ted Cruz suspended his campaign for the nomination after a defeat in Indiana, according to reports Tuesday.

Donald Trump was projected to take well over 50 percent of the vote in the Hoosier state, eclipsing Cruz, a U.S. senator from Texas. Ohio Governor John Kasich was running a distant third. Kasich is still campaigning for the nomination.

"The movement you have started is extraordinary and I love each and every one of you. From the beginning, I've said I would continue on as long as there was a viable path to victory. Tonight, I'm sorry to say, it appears that path has been foreclosed," Cruz said in his concession speech.

"... Together we left it all on the field in Indiana," Cruz said. "We gave it everything we had. But the voters chose another path, and so, with a heavy heart but with boundless optimism for the long-term future of our nation, we are suspending our campaign."

Cruz, a pastor's son, was among the final three candidates for the Republican nomination. After his victory in Indiana, Trump appears well on his way to garnering the 1,237 delegates needed to win the nomination outright.
