What God Taught Me When My Daughter Came Out as Gay With Ellen DeGeneres

Nancy Heche, an author and the mother of Ellen DeGeneres’ former lover Anne, describes how her daughter called her at work to explain that she’d “fallen in love with a woman” at the Oscars. Nancy was in shock. Describing the scenario as a betrayal toward the family and the Lord, she was very angry toward Anne as well.

“I was in school when Anne came out with Ellen, and I would sit in class and say, ‘Does anybody have any help and the explanation? There ought to be some psychological explanation for this.’ But there I got no help. And I had no idea that when my husband died, I had no idea that anybody else in the world ever had a husband who was homosexual. It was so foreign to me.”

Nancy reflects on her late husband who was likely active homosexually her entire married life, she says on the “Pure Passion” podcast on the Charisma Podcast Network. She wonders if that had something to do with her daughter’s fascination with homosexuality. Nevertheless, Nancy wrestled with her faith as she navigated the best response to all of the heartache in her family.

“I’m called as a parent to be like the father in the story of the prodigal son. I’m called to be an all-loving, all-giving, all-forgiving, everything I have is yours kind of person. And not to measure out my love according to how somebody acts or what they believe.”
