‘Riverdale’ Star Says God Has ‘Really Anointed’ His New Christian Movie

K.J. Apa, star of Riverdale and the upcoming Christian romance I Still Believe, said on The View that he believes God has “anointed” I Still Believe.

In the movie, Apa plays Christian rocker Jeremy Camp, whose first wife, Melissa Lynn Henning-Camp, died from ovarian cancer in February 2001, mere months after they got married.

“This story itself I think is so powerful,” Apa said on The View. “It’s a story about, ultimately, love and two people who love each other so dearly and are willing to go through everything with each other no matter what that is or what that looks like. As soon as I read that first script, and I spoke to the Erwin brothers about it, I was pretty terrified of the story, just because it was a huge responsibility to play a real-life person, and I wanted to get it right and honor everyone in the film. I feel like God really anointed this film, and I’ve never been so proud of anything in my entire life.”

In an upcoming interview on the C-Pop podcast, Jeremy Camp told host Taylor Berglund that he was impressed by Apa on the set of I Still Believe.

“K.J., of course, is like a teen heartthrob of this generation, and to have him get on The View yesterday … and say, ‘I feel like God has anointed this film’ was huge. It was breathtaking to hear him say that on The View. I don’t know. To watch somebody play and portray you is kind of nerve-wracking, because you think, I hope they get it right and they don’t portray me in a weird way that’s not me. And I felt like I was watching myself when I was watching him. My wife said, ‘He did such an amazing job playing you.’ I’m very happy with how they portrayed everybody [in the movie.]”

When asked whether Apa was a Christian, Camp said, “Yeah. He is. I don’t know exactly. I’m not going to sit here and say I know where he stands completely, you know what I mean? But he definitely has faith, and he definitely believes in Jesus and believes in God, and that’s all I can really say. I don’t know. But we’ve had some really good conversations, and God is doing a lot in his heart and his life right now. It’s been really beautiful to watch. That’s all I can say.”

I Still Believe—which stars Shania Twain, Gary Sinise and Britt Robertson in addition to Apa—debuts in theaters nationwide tomorrow.
